Salem is a major district in the state of Tamil Nadu located in southern India. The other major towns in the district include Omalur, Mettur and Attur. Approaching the city is very easy because it is well connected by railways as well as roadways. Initially it was the largest district in the state but was later divided into two parts as Salem and Dharmapuri. The census bureau in India recorded that the total area of the city was around 40 square miles. The population here was found to be 751,438 according to the census measure in the year 2001 which has been increasing ever since. The major economy producing industries here include the textile, poultry, automotive and many sugar based industries. Salem is very well known for its mangoes that are being exported on a large scale in the nearby towns and villages. The language commonly spoken here is mainly Tamil because more than 85%25 of the total population here are Tamil. Pongal is the festival that is celebrated with great exuberance. The climate here is of the sub-tropical type because it is located close to the equator. The average temperature throughout the year is thus high ranging between 23 to 28 degrees.
