Thanjavur was the capital of the Cholas from the 9th to the 13th-Century and during this time, it attained the peak of its glory.

The Royal Palace reflects this fact very elegantly. Although it is the palace of the Cholas, it was later on partly built by the Nayaks and then by the Marathas. The palace is marked by wide halls, observation towers, a shady courtyard and wide corridors.

Many parts of the palace now lie in ruins and restoration work is currently underway.

A library, a museum and an art gallery are also located in the palace. The Art Gallery features a spectacular collection of artifacts from the 8th and 9th centuries, which belongs to the Chola dynasty.

Especially notable are the granite and bronze statues. The bell tower has seen extensive restoration work and now stands apart from the rest of the structure.
