Chettinad is a distinct region of Sivaganga district in southern Tamil Nadu, India. Tiruchirappalli Airport lies at about hundred-km away while Karaikudi is the largest town of the area.
It is also considered as the capital of Chettinad. Trains running from Chennai to Rameshwaram take halt at this town. Chettinad is famous as the home of the Nattukottai Chettiars, which is a prosperous business and banking community.
The Chettinad region is well-known for its culinary delicacies. It is both spicy and healthy. Many types of dals, curries, sambhar and rice as well as sweets are the regions gift to the world. ‘Kara kozhambu’ is widely known as the best tasting sambhar in South India.
Numerous Temples built mainly by royal dynasties like Cholas still stand in triumph and are very much part of the daily lives of local citizens. The cultural heritage of Chettinad is preserved by means of Mansions which are richly constructed with marble and teak wood.
The Chettinad Sari is unique for its use of colors and pattern, as well as its weight. Karaikudi has a CECRI laboratory which specializes in electro-chemical research.
