The Rock Fort Temple at Tiruchirapalli actually consists of 3 separate temples. Manikka Vinayaka Temple is situated at the foothills, Uchhi Pillayar Koyli at the hilltop and Taayumaanava Koyil or Shivastalam on the hill proper.

The hill is actually eighty-three meters high and is believed to be one of the oldest in the world, standing for more then three-billion years.

Shivastalam is the bigger of the temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It contains a huge stone-statue of Shiva in the form of a Lingam and a separate sanctum for Parvati, the goddess.

The architecture of this temple is simply awe-inspiring. Taayumaanava Koyil is a Ganesha Temple, which is much smaller which can be reached from Shivastalam by means of steep steps.

From the temple premises, stunning views of Srirangam, Trichi and nearby rivers can be enjoyed. The archeological department of India maintains all these temples.
