The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a UNESCO listed rack railway line between Ooty and Mettupalayam built between 1891 and 1901.
The journey starts at 326 meters and ends at 2,203 meters above sea level. The line is 48km long and goes through 16 tunnels and 250 bridges. The trains go daily and the journey lasts 290 minutes uphill and 215 minutes downhill.
Other places worth visiting while in Ooty include Botanical Gardens, Fernhill Palace (1km outside of Ooty, converted into hotel), Ooty Lake and Boat House (artificial lake built by John Sulivan, the British governor of Coimbatore the old textile capital and popularly known as the Bradford of the East).
Ooty and its sister city Conoor, are home to vast expanses of tea gardens, with one of the oldest tea estates in the area being Glenmorgan about 25 km from Ooty.
