Udhagamandalam also known as Ooty, is the capital of the Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu, located in the mountains called Western Ghats or commonly Blue Mountains at an altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level.
The town has around 100,000 inhabitants and is known as one of the most popular tourist and health resort destinations in India.
Ooty is a very popular hill station (called the “Queen of hill stations”) built in the colonial times by the British, who could not stand the heat. In the colonial time the surrounding hills were owned mostly by British citizens, for Ooty was summer and weekend getaway destination.
Due to its high mountain locations, you find here pleasant cool temperatures in summer and might be surprised by cold temperatures in winter. The temperatures remain usually at 15 to 20°C year round, dropping to 0 °C during winter.
The surrounding mountains are full of greenery, including tea gardens and eucalyptus trees, and are ideal for trekking, walks and picturesque views.
