The Itimad-ud-Daulah tomb is an ideal picture of the Islamic style of architecture and is the first tomb that has been built on a riverbank in India.
It is a pure white and intricately carved tomb that has octagonal shaped towers, inlays work, arched entrances, obscure marble screen work and exquisitely carved floral patterns.
On the top, there is a closed kiosk rather than a dome and on the four towers there are small domed canopies supported by pillars.
The entry fee for Indian citizens is 0.24 USD (INR 10) and for foreigners is 2.62 USD (INR 110).
Itimad-ud-Daulah’s real name was Ghiyas-Ud-din or Ghiyas Beg and he was a poor merchant from Persia. In Emperor Jehangir’s court he became the Chief Minister and was conferred upon the title of Itimad-Ud-Daulah.
His daughter Nur Jahan was the wife of Emperor Jehangir and after Emperors death in 1622, Nur Jahan began the project of constructing his tomb.
