Kanpur the most populous city in Uttar Pradesh situated on the banks of the Ganges River towards north-east while the Pandu River (Yamuna) is towards the south.
Towards the south of Kanpur is the Hamirpur district while towards the north-east is the Unnao district.
As per the census of 2001, the population of Kanpur was 4.13 million.
In the summer season from April to June, the temperature may soar to 47.5 degrees Celsius and is coupled with dust-storm-cum-heat-waves. In the winter season, the temperature may drop to -3 degrees Celsius and there is severe fog in December and January.
Kanpur is known for textile and leather goods of good quality. It is a major industrial city with chemical works, sugar refineries, flour and vegetable oil mills, cotton, wool and leather industries and aviation.
