Rumi Darwaza was built by Nawab Asaf-ud-daula in 1784 and is one of the most grandiose architectural edifices in India. The fine architectural style of Awadh can be understood through this monument.
The Rumi Darwaza is similar in design to a gateway in ancient Constantinople and hence also called as the ‘Turkish gateway.’ The word ‘Rumi’ originates from modern day Rome that was called as Istanbul when it was the capital place of the Eastern Roman Empire.
The source of inspiration of the Rumi Darwaza is an identical gateway in Istanbul. The height of the Rumi Darwaza is 60 feet and the uppermost section of it is made from a beautifully carved octagonal Chatri (Umbrella) which is easily accessible by a staircase.
Above the Rumi Darwaza an enormous lantern was placed and this would illuminate the monument at night and make it look very pleasing.
The sides of the arch has artistically carved flower buds from where small jets of water gush outwards and this entire structure appears like a gateway to paradise.
