The Sikandar Bagh is situated on the outskirts of Lucknow and is a villa and garden estate also known as Sikandra Bagh or Secundra Bagh.
It was constructed for Wajid Ali Shah, the Nawab of Awadh, as a summer house and named after Sikander Mahal Begum, the favorite wife of the Nawab. The area of this Bagh is 150 square meters and there is a small pavilion in the middle.
It is surmised that the pavilion was used for Kathak dance, Ras-lilas, poetic and music mehfils and other cultural programs for which the Nawab had a liking. In 1800 A.D., Nawab Saadat Ali Khan constructed this place as a royal garden which was enhanced later by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, who was the last king of Awadh.
Over the years, articles like rifles, muskets, shields, swords and cannon balls were accidentally dug out of this garden and further exhibited in the NBRI exposition. Currently, this structure is used as the National Botanical Research Institute of India.
