Mathura is situated 50 kilometers towards the north of Agra and 145 kilometers towards the south of New Delhi.
Toward its west the Bharatpur district of Rajasthan exists while toward its east is the Aligarh district. The average height of Mathura is 174 meters.
As per the census of 2001, the population of Mathura was 0.298 million.
In Mathura the summers are very hot while the winters are cold and foggy. The south-west monsoon rains are active from July to September.
Mathura is regarded as the birth place of Lord Krishna and is considered as a holy place by the people of Brahmanical, Jain and Buddhist faith.
Mathura was ruled by kings of the lunar and solar dynasties and the culture here is a combination of Indian, Indo-Scythian and Hellenistic cultures.
The Mathura School of Art prospered here for 1200 years. A survey of this school can be done at the Government Museum.
