The Causatti Ghat (river front) is one of the several Ghats in Varanasi. The name ‘Causatthi’ has its origin in the word ‘chausatha’ which means sixty four. The purport is that the mother goddess has sixty four numbers of yoginis or assistant goddesses.
Close to this Ghat is situated the temple of the mother goddess Chausatthi Devi. It is believed that this Ghat was visited by a renowned Sanskrit scholar of medieval times named as Madhusudana Sarasvati.
In 1670, the king of Udaipur is said to have renovated this Ghat. In the Hindu month of Chaitra (March-April) on the New Moon Day, a very large number of devotees pay a visit to the Causatthi Ghat.
On this particular day, the devotees pay a visit to the Chausatthi Devi temple. This is followed by a dip in the hallowed waters of the river Ganges. Another crucial day at this Ghat is the colorful festival called Holi.
On this day, people climb the Ghat to make symbolic offerings to their ancestors.
