The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is also called as the Golden Temple due to 15.5 meters high golden spire. This is one of the most famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.

It is situated on the west bank of Ganges the holiest river in Hinduism. The deity is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (the holiest of Shiva deities). The main deity is called Vishweshwara or Vishwanatha which means the Ruler of the Universe.

This main deity or the linga is 60 centimeters in height and 90 centimeters in circumference and housed in a silver altar.

In this temple complex there are small temples for Virupaksha, Virupaksh Gauri, Sanishwara, Vinayaka, Vishnu, Avimukteshwara, Dhandapani and Mahakala. There is also a small well called as the Jnana Vapi or the wisdom well.

It is conceived that at the time of invasion, the Jyotirlinga was hidden in a well.
