Sarnath along with Kushinagar, Gaya and Lumbini form the Buddhist quadrilateral in India. Sarnath is the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after enlightment.
Kushinagar is the place where he attained Nirvana. Lord Buddha was born at Lumbini and got enlightment at Gaya. At the actual spot where Lord Buddha delivered the sermon, a beautiful Stupa has been erected which is called as the Dhamek Stupa and this is a must visit for tourists.
Another attractive place in Sarnath is the popular Ashoka Pillar. After Emperor Ashoka converted to Buddhism he erected several pillars. The Ashoka Pillar is one of these.
Another important tourist destination is Sarnath museum. Here, some of the most precious relics and possessions concerning Buddhism are retained. Sarnath is connected by railways and airways to the rest of India.
