Shopping in Varanasi is indeed a unique experience. Being one of the oldest cities in India, it seems to be the treasure house of Indian Tradition and Culture.
To begin with, Benarasi Silk sarees form and indespensable part of Indian Culture with its wonderful zari and silver brocade work. The sarees are said to haved passed from one generation to the next without loosing its originality and charm. It is still a part of Indian Bride's trousseu. Strikingly smooth and vibrant colours almost epitomize the feminine grace. Do not forget to pick up one or two Benarasi Sarees while shopping in Varanasi.
Other shopping attractions are the beautiful hand knotted carpets from Mirzapur. The art originated from the court craftsmen of the Mughals and have been passed from generations to generations like the silk sarees. It is truly one of the best buys with its mesmerizing designs in ivory and soft greens with a contrast border.
Apart from the illustrated fabrics one can always pick up small sandstone items like ashtrays, candlestands, penstands, copperwares and brasswares, glass bangles, masks of Hindu and Buddhist deities, costume jewelleries as gifts and souvenirs.
The state Emporiums in Godoulia, Chowk and Lahurabir has a vast collection of handicrafts and artefacts, but the cost is a bit on the higher side. If looking for a better bargain, one can always try the shops near Dashaswamedh Ghat, Vishwanath gali,Gyanvapi, Chowk, Thatheri Bazar.
However make sure you start bargaining from half of the printed price and slowly go up .
