Haldwani is a city which, along with its twin township of Kathagodam forms the Haldwani- Kathgodam municipal board in Nainital district in Uttarakhand. Haldwani is one of the most populous towns in Uttarakhand. This town is also known as the “Gateway of Kumaon”. In another region, Kumaoni, the place is called “Halduvani” after the tree named Haldu was found in abundance before the deforestation of the agriculture and settlement.
In 1904, this town was constituted as a notified area and in 1907 Haldwani got the status of town area. The Haldwani Kathgodam Municipal Council was established in 1942. At present it is the second largest Municipal Council in Uttarakhand after Haridwar.
Haldwani is located at 29.22 North latitude and 79.52 East longitudes. It has an average elevation of 424 meters which comes to 1,391 feet. This town is also settled on a piedmont grade and is called Bhabhar. This grade is where the Mountain Rivers go underneath to reemerge in the Indo-Gangetic plain.
