The Calcutta Metro or the Kolkata Metro is an underground rail network in Kolkata which is run by the Indian railways. This is the first underground system constructed in India and has begun in 1984.
This line starts in the north at Dum Dum and moves through Esplanade and Park Street in the midst of the city and ends in Tollygunge at the south.
The system length is 16.5 kilometers and there are 17 stations within it. Out of these 15 are underground and there is one on the surface and one elevated. In each train there are 8 coaches.
The average speed is 30 kilometers per hour and the travel duration from Dum Dum to Tollygunge is 33 minutes.
In the peak hours, these trains have an interval of 7 minutes and at other times it would be 10 to 15 minutes. Each train can carry approx 2558 passengers.
A new route is under construction from Tollygunge onwards up to New Gharia.
