The Kali Temple at Kalighat can be visited from 8 am to 9 pm. The preferred timings are either early in the morning or between 3 pm to 5 pm. There is no admission fee.
From different parts of Kolkata, there are metered taxis, minibuses, tramcars and local buses to reach this place. The Metro Underground railway also has a station at Kalighat.
Kalighat is one of the most sacred Kali temples. This place has special importance as, as per Hindu mythology and ancient scriptures like “Chandi”, the toe of the right foot of Sati fell at this place and hence it is looked upon as one of the fifty two Shakti Peethas in India.
There is chaos of a large magnitude at this temple. Hence, it is recommended that the tourist ought to visit this temple along with an experienced local guide. The ancient Hindu practice of Tantrik Hinduism is increasing in popularity in the western world.
So, it is not surprising to find some western tourists, who have a passion for Tantra, offering prayers at Kalighat.
