The Nakhoda Mosque is situated in Jacquaria Street, at the junction of Mahatma Gandhi Road and Chitpore Road and the entry is free from 6 am to 8 pm. Some time ago, this was a small mosque but Abdar Rahim Osman who was a resident of Cutch constructed the current mosque in 1926.
This became the biggest mosque in Kolkata where 10,000 individuals can perform ‘Namaaz’ in the huge prayer hall of the mosque. This mosque has been built similar to the manner in which Akbar’s tomb was constructed at Sikandra using Indo-Saracenic architecture.
There is a dome and a couple of minarets that are 151 feet in height as well as 25 small pillars that have a height of 100 to 117 feet. The gateway of this mosque is created from the granite stones brought from Tolepur and is a copy of the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri.
The total cost of constructing this mosque was 0.036 million USD (INR 1.5 million).
