Nirmal Hirday (when translated means ‘Pure Heart’) is located at J.C. Bose Road. It is the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity and was the first home of Mother Teresa to care for destitute and dying people.

Currently, this organization has spread throughout the world across 126 countries in 300 affiliated organizations and is helping the people who have been abandoned by the society.

At this place one can learn more about the works of Mother Teresa as this was her home for 44 years and she is also buried in this building.

The Nirmal Hirday Home for the Dying was started by Mother Teresa in 1952 at an abandoned Kali temple in Calcutta, while the most recent branch of this organization has been started in China.

In 1969, Nirmal Hirday was shot for the first time for a BBC documentary by Micheal Muggredge. A doctor visits Nirmal Hirday thrice a week and the most important aspect is that the helpers at this place administer the sick to a large extent.
