The Tagore House also called as Jorasanko Thakurbari is the place where Rabindranath Tagore a Nobel laureate was born, where he spent his life and also breathed his last.
This house was constructed in the 18th century by Dwarkanath Tagore the grandfather of Rabindranath. In the neighborhood of this house exists the twin Shiva temples called as Jora Shankar which is the origin of the word Jorasanko for the Tagore’s house.
Currently, the Tagore House has been transformed to the Rabindra Bharati University and Rabindra Bharati Museum. The University is a center for Indian Classical Fine Arts. In the Museum there are magnificent works and creations of Rabindranath and Abanindranath spread in three galleries.
In the first gallery one can trace the life and activities of Rabindranath Tagore while the second gallery depicts the brothers and sisters of Rabindranath as well as distinguished members like Abanindranath, Maharishi Debendranath, Dwarkanath and the third gallery portrays the Bengal renaissance and the contributions of the pioneers of the Tagore family
