The Park Street Cemetery which is situated in the midst of Kolkata is one of the earliest modern cemeteries in the world.
Currently, this cemetery can be found in the commercial and residential district of Kolkata encircled by upper middle class apartments and business houses.
This cemetery houses more than 1600 dead that have been buried over more than 150 years right from the era when the colonial power was at its pinnacle. Some graves date back to 1767 and the last one is of 1895.
In the past a thoroughfare bifurcated the cemetery to North and South cemeteries which was named as Burial Ground Road and later renamed as Park Street due to a private deer park nearby.
This cemetery was initially referred to as ‘Great Cemetery’ and was possibly the biggest Christian cemetery in the 19th century outside America and Europe
