The best place for shopping in Calcutta is the New Market which offers excellent bargaining experience. Others include Dakshinapan, Gariahat, Central Cottage Industries, and the brassware shops at Kalighat Road.
There are numerous auction houses and shops on Park Street, Free School Street and the Little Russel Street. Here you can get a variety of local handicrafts made from conch-shells, terracotta figurines, painted clay plagues, silk saris, scarves and stoles.
Leather bags, wood carvings and woolen garments are the most famous and available in various markets and shops spread around the city. Calcutta is also known for its intricately handcrafted gold, silver and diamond jewelry.
