The Howrah Bridge is built over the Hooghly River in Kolkata. It is so named because it connects the Howrah city to its twin city, Kolkata. This bridge was renamed as Rabindra Setu on 14th June 1965, after Rabindranath Tagore who was the first Indian Nobel laureate and a great poet.
If bridges of the balanced Cantilever Suspension type are compared, the Howrah Bridge is one of the longest in the world. This bridge faces the inclement climate of the Bay of Bengal region and also has to face an everyday traffic of nearly 0.15 million vehicles and 4 million pedestrians.
The tower height is 82 meters and there are three spans having length 99.125, 457.50 and 99.125 meters. The length of the drop-in span is 172.02 meters. This bridge was constructed from 1937 to 1943 by Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Co. Ltd. and Rendel Palmer & Tritton.
Steel is used in the construction of this bridge.
