Overall rating: 8

Situated in eastern India with Kolkata as its capital, West Bengal is considered as the gateway to Eastern India. It covers an area of about 88,752 sq.kms.

Two complete conflicting cities, Kolkata, with is clamor, disorder and squalor, and Darjeeling with is tranquility and serenity are located within the same state.

The main local dialect is Bengali. Other languages commonly spoken are Hindi and English.

There are numerous spots for the visitor in South Kolkata, along the Bay of Bengal and in the north down the length of Darjeeling.

West Bengal consists of an assortment of museums relative to their art and culture, various Pilgrim centers and numerous Hill resorts.

The best time to visit West Bengal is from October to March.

Its my birthplace and I can say that it's a little and emotional place. But still many issues have to be focused carefully for its more development. Such things like safety of a lady in some of the galis' here and there in our city can be made better by appointing police vans or so. The literacy and mentality of some people from rural areas, has to be developed by spreading the light of 'SHIKHSHA' to them. There is still a beautiful city to visit and which have to learn many things above all to observe and learn about a different culture.

Darjeeling has stood firm so far in its past glory. I believe its high time that Darjeeling revamps itself and comes up with major plans to upgrade its over all setting to come to the standards that are developing everywhere in terms of roads, cleanliness, shopping areas, crowd dispersion, parks, transportation, awareness as to respect towards traffic rules, public places, social obligations to keeping the place pristine in its setting and more.
