Gunung Sibayak
One of the most accessible volcanoes in Indonesia is the Gunung Sibayak. Usually on Sundays, people embark on a one-day trip. The path is very steep and slippery and hence there is need of good walking boots.
Also, it is very cold near the pinnacle of the volcano and thus some warm clothing is advisable. The hike generally requires about 5 hours and for those who are hiking alone, it is suggested to hire a guide through the guesthouses.
Out of the 3 ways to ascend, the simplest starts from the northwest of the base town and is a 10 minute walk from the Sibayak Multinational Resthouse. There exists a left hand path close to the entrance fee hut along which the distance is 7 Kms and the trek is decreased to about 3 hours.

Danau Maninjau
Danau Maninjau is a peaceful volcanic lake that is a few hours bus ride from Bukittinggi. The road to reach this lake is very exiting ; there are 44 turns through the valley. One can enjoy the cool weather and swim in the early morning dawn.
