Total area of Padang is 694.96 sq. km.
Padang has been known as one of the trade centers of Indonesia since the sixteenth century. Between the sixteenth and seventeenth century, pepper had been cultivated as well as traded with none other than India. The other countries with whom this trade was carried out included United Kingdom, Portugal, and Netherlands.
In the year 1663, Padang came under Dutch authority. In the year 1680, a ‘trading post’ was built by Dutch. British authority ruled this city twice; between 1781 and 1784 at the time of Fourth Anglo-Dutch War; and again between 1795 and 1819 at the time of Napoleonic Wars.
Padang has been divided in to 11 sub-districts. It can boast of population of 750000. This city is being served by Minangkabau International Airport, which has opened recently.
