Palembang can be described as a city located in southern part of Sumatra, an island in Indonesia. It’s, in fact, capital of South Sumatra province.
Palembang was capital of the age-old, ‘Buddhist kingdom’ comprising of Srivijaya which controlled a huge part; which I called Indonesia and Malaysia now. After a raid undertaken in the year 1025 by ‘Chola Empire’, i.e. during the reign of Emperor Rajendra Chola I; the importance of Palembang started declining. This led to the shifting of capital of Srivijaya towards the north, i.e. Jambi. This place is origin of ‘Parameaswara’, i.e. Malacca Sultanate’s founder as well.
Dutch colonization’s architectural legacy can still be seen in Palembang. Musi River that happens to flow through city has been provided with deep-water port facilities.
The naval ‘Battle of Palembang’ had been fought adjoining the city at the time of World War II from 13th to 15th of February, 1942.
