Semarang can be mentioned as a city located in northern coast of Java island, Indonesia. Its’, in fact capital of Central Java.
The total area of Semarang is 373.67 sq. Km.
The population of Semarang as of now has been assumed to be 1.5 million. It was the main port at the time of ‘Dutch colonial era’. This importance still stands as it is. As such, the city can boast of a huge ‘ethnically Chinese’ population.
The name ‘Semarang’ is believed to be derived from concatenation of two words- ‘assam; meaning tamarind and ‘arang’; meaning charcoal. The other version states that a Chinese word ‘Sam Po Lang’; meaning ‘city of Sam Po’ led to emergence of the name of the city.
Semarang’s northern part is constructed on coastal plain; whereas southern parts; which are better called Candi Baru and Candi lama stand on a higher ground. 2 rivers go on to have run through city; through the eastern and western sides respectively. Such a thing divides Semarang in to 3rds.
