The culture of Sumatra is affected by people of different religions who speak 52 different languages. A majority of people are Muslims (87 percent), the central Bataks are Protestant Christians (10 percent) while the rest are Chinese, Catholics, Buddhists and Hindus.

As per the 2005 census, the population of Sumatra was 45 million.

The climate is tropical with an average temperature of 25 to 27 degrees Celsius. The day temperature along the coast is rarely below 30 degrees Celsius.
