The airport complex is located in a 15,000 hectare area 30 miles to the south of Tehran, in Fashafouyeh, near Shar-e Rey.

The airport started operating on 8th May 2004 but was taken over by the Revolutionary Guards after just one day of operation due to security concerns. It is almost 1.5 hour taxi journey from the city to reach the airport as there is no direct link to the terminal.

The newly opened airport is operated by local airline companies led by a national carrier Iran Air and will eventually be able to handle 100 million passengers a year in the future.

The Airport's Second terminal is confirmed to be an equally dominant terminal, although it is still under construction. The passenger terminal building has utilities like departure and arrival halls at ground level, a mezzanine arrivals floor as well as a basement.

The new airport is very clean and modern including fast immigration and baggage collection.
