Haifa University was founded in 1963 by Haifa mayor, Abba Hushi, in order to operate the academic auspies of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. It has a campus which spreads along a Carmel Mountain ridge to the southeast of Haifa and is surrounded by the Carmel National Park. In 1972, the university gained academic accreditation as a separate institution from the Council for Higher Education. This amazing university is also the most pluralistic institution of higher education in Israel. In 2008-09, there were almost 17,000 students who were studying accomplishing degrees of BA, MA or Ph.D.
