Kasuga shrine
The Kasuga shrine is dedicated to the ancestral gods of the Fujiwara family (Amenokoyane and his consort Hime-okami) and the divinities Futsunushi and Takemikazuchi. There are four separate structures that have been founded by Fujiwara Nagate. These edifices are peculiar illustrations of the Kasuga-zukuri style. The roofline is curved, the walls are white faced and the beams are painted red. There was a practice till 1863 of pulling down these buildings every 20 years and re-erecting them in the original form. Currently, this renewal method is confined to the roofs.
Kofuku-ji temple
One of the seven great temples of Nara is the Kofuku-ji temple. In 669 AD, this was established by Kagami-no-Himehiko, the wife of Fujiwara-no-Kamatari. This was a family temple of the Fujiwara and a main temple of the Hosso sect. The importance of the temple increased with the increase in the power of the Fujiwara family. In the past, there were 175 buildings, but most of these were destroyed in the 12th century due to the fight between Taira and Minamoto families.
Nara National Museum
The Nara National Museum is locally called as Kokuritsu Hakubutsuken. It was constructed in 1895 and extended in 1972. In the eastern gallery, paintings, sculpture and calligraphy are exhibited and in the western gallery, archaelogical finds are displayed. There are also major works of art belonging to the Nara period.
