Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum was built in 1955 in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Japan with an intention of educating people about the devastating effects of the atomic bombing which took place here at the end of World War II.

The main mission of the museum is to contribute to world peace and it aims to bring about the abolition of nuclear weapons around the world.

The museum displays what remains of the photos, materials and belongings left after the bombing and shows how the city recovered to arrive at its present status.

There are 2 wings in the museum. The West Wing of the museum focuses on the damage done by the bomb including personal belongings of victims which were damaged.

The effects of damage done by the heat on metal, glass, flesh, stone and wood, the after effects of the blast and the long term damage caused by radiation are clearly depicted.

The East Wing has sections which explain the history of Hiroshima before the damaging effect of the bomb, the lives of the people after the bombing and information about the nuclear age and its effects.
