Monument and Historic Building
The Golden Pavilion
Rating:
Kinkaku-ji also known as the Golden Pavilion was constructed in 1397 as a cottage for Shogun Yoshimitsu Ashikaga, which was to be used after his retirement.

The complex is picturesquely situated in the garden and has Shinden style architecture. The three-story temple complex is stretched along a pond and the structure is replicated in the calm waters.

The unique beauty of the Kinkaku-ji and its reflection make the temple one of the most powerful visions. The two stories are covered with pure gold leaf. This is a major attraction. The temple is also famous as a Shariden that houses relics of the Buddha.

The Pavilion is established in a splendid Japanese strolling garden. Kyōko-chi (Mirror Pond) is located just in front of the pavilion. The numerous stones on the pond represent the Buddhist creation story. Hôsuiin, the first floor is built in the shinden style. Chôondô, the second story is built in Buke style while the third floor, known as Kukkyôchô is built in Buddha Hall style.
