Completed in the year 645, Sensoji (also called Asakusa Kannon temple) is one of the oldest temples of Tokyo.
Located in Asakusa, this Buddhist temple has a shrine of Kannon, the goddess of Mercy. The outer gate of the Sensoji is called the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) which is a symbol of Asakusa.
Go to buy the yukata, folding fans, rice crackers and more souvenirs on a 200-meter shopping street called Nakamise, which ends at the temple’s second gate, Hozomon.
Beyond the Hozomon is the temple’s main building and a five-storey pagoda. Near the main temple, visitors attractions include the Asakusa shrine, large incense burners and a large wooden fortune telling stand.
To the left of the temple is the Hanayashiki amusement park.
Various events are held all through the year like Sanja Matsuri (May), Hozuki-ichi (July), Tokyo Jidai Matsuri (November), Hagoita-ichi (December) and more.
