Tokyo is well known as an expensive place but with the right advice and a little careful preparation even this buzzing metropolis can be affordable.
Accommodation can be a real cost in Tokyo. Instead of heading for the usual option of a chain hotel, look out for what the Japanese call "minshuku". These are small business hotels that offer simple rooms at a reasonable cost.
Finding your way around can be a lot easier with a guide, but this service doesn’t come cheap. Instead, look up a local "good-will guide". These are local people who offer a personalized tour around their city for free, though you will be expected to pay any entrance fees and lunch.
Finally to eat on a budget head to the basement eateries of the big department stores.
