Japanese manners and customs vary a lot from those of western people. Japanese hosts are very tolerant towards visitors, but a formal and polite behaviour is expected from visitors.
Bowing is the traditional form of greeting but a handshake is also accepted with the same gratitude. Clothes to pack depend upon the weather here.
Giving tips is not a culture here unless some extra service are requested. Save your wooden chopsticks given out on the flight to Japan. Practice using them and do so in local restaurants where shiny chopsticks are given.
Exchange of gifts is a common custom and do not forget to take a gift when visiting someone home. Learn some words in Japanese and carry a handy phrase book while travelling.
ATMs in Japan do not accept foreign cards, but post offices and 7 Eleven convenience stores will.
