This is one of the most amazing trips I've ever done in my life...!
Well, there are several options to reach Petra from Amman. You can avail of minibuses which depart from Wadabat bus station in Amman. For the entire journey, I remember that the bus service charges 3 Jordanian Dinar (JD), with no extra charges for luggage.
Another viable option for transportation, is hiring a private taxi for 75 JD or less, for a return journey to Petra. Depending on the fare paid, the driver will wait for up to 6 hours before beginning the return journey. A normal taxi can be hired by stopping one and negotiating a fair price. Average costs are approximately 40 JD.
But the best way to go from Amman to Petra is by private car! There are many car rental offices in Amman, most of them are not so expensive, so that it's very easy to arrange a private trip to Petra by your own. And the great advantage is that you can choose the itinerary : don't you dare not to pass through the famous and breath-taking Kings Highway !
