The Citadel

The Citadel which towers over the city of Amman offers some beautiful views of the temple of Hercules which was built in 161-169AD in the reign of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, of the Byzantine church which is marked by Corinthian columns and dates back to the sixth or seventh centuries and the Omayyad Palace which dates back to 720AD under the rule of the Omayyad Arabs.
This palace is one of the most impressive buildings of the citadel of the city of Amman and is also known as the Al-Qaser.
It has 4 vaulted chambers, a monumental gateway and a cruciform audience hall.
Within the National Archaeological museum situated near the Citadel there is an exhibit of the scrolls discovered in the caves of Qumran near the Dead Sea.
From the Citadel one can even see the white and black Abu Darwish mosque on the top of the Jebel Ashrafiah. The Citadel is open for visitors from ten in the morning daily.
