Jerash lies in northern Jordan and is the fourteenth largest municipality of Jordan with a population of 31,650.
It is situated at about 48 km north of Amman.
Jerash, which is famous for its Greco-Roman city of Geresa is in fact ‘Old Jerash’, while ‘Modern Jerash’ has thrived to the east of the ruins, sharing only the same city wall and nothing else.
Its altitude of 500 meters gives Jerash a temperate climate and clear visibility over the neighbouring low-altitude areas.
It has varying geographical features that range from rich fertile soils to cold mountains. The land is appropriate for growing a wide range of crops and already contains more than 1.25 million olive trees in the Jerash Governorship.
Jerash boasts an ethnically diverse population, and the majority consists of Muslims and Arabs along with a number of Christians, Armenians and Circassians.
The economy is largely dependent on Tourism.
