The Siq

To reach the pleasant city of Petra, one has to pass through The Siq, a long passage through a split in the rock, with a unique yet unimpressive entrance.
The Siq can be explored on foot or by riding. It is believed that when the mountain was split into two, the action of the waters of the Wadi Musa and the winds transformed the sharp edges into smooth curves.
The Siq changes shape, with wide and sunlit spaces at one end, while the formation narrows at the other end blocking out the daylight and heat. The walls on either side are magnificent, most of them being up to 100 meters in height.
The originally paved floor is now layered with soft sand. There are channels in the walls of the Siq which carry drinking water to the city and a dam is situated to the right of the entrance that prevents it flooding.
While going through this 1,200 meters of excitement and wonder, visitors will also come across some niches, shrines and carvings.
