The Treasury
Rating:
|
The end of the Siq is very dramatic and impressive for visitors, as was originally planned by the Nabataeans.
The first view visitors have on emerging from the extremely narrow gorge, is of an extraordinary classical and magnificent architecture of the ancient world, known as The Treasury.
Contrary to its name, the Treasury is not a real treasury. According to legends, treasure was kept in urns and to get it out, the urns were shot at.
The bullet holes are still visible in the carved stone urn situated at the top of this great building. There are two levels in the Treasury’s facade, which glints in the dazzling sun.
Carved out of solid rock, this spectacular building is 40 meters high and decorated with sculptures of historical importance like the Eagle at the top, the central figure of El-Uzza and vertical footholds on either side.
