If you find yourself in Beirut and feeling like you really need to get into the place, see some of the history of if.  If it all feels a little too chaotic, a bit too frantically alive then the Beirut Memory Museum is the ideal place to come to pin this city down for a moment and make a little sense of it. The arabic name means literally "the house of Beirut" it is a new museum and urban cultural center which will open in 2013 in Beirut's Ashrafieh neighborhood.

The cultural center will be housed in the restored Barakat building, also known as the "Yellow house", a historic landmark.  The Beit Beirut second floor will function as a permanent exhibition which recounts the history of Beirut from the nineteenth century onward.  The collections to be exhibited include documents, records and the municipality's archive which was made accessible to the public. The upper floors were renovated to house a multifunctional hall for temporary cultural, artistic and musical events, so this is set to be a one-stop-shop for getting to grips with this fantastic city, both historically and culturally.
