Racing Stadium
Beirut’s racing stadium is popularly called the hippodrome and it is the place in the city to indulge in the furious pastime of horse racing and of course betting on it. The racing stadium is a very big place and only once a week, on a Sunday, does this old place come alive to the sound of frantically driven horses, keen little jockeys and the drumming of hooves slammed down. It is a very exciting and unusual way to get into another side of this constantly surprising city.
Before the races start, the horses are led around a small loop (visible in the google map - it's the small green oval below the large orange track), which allows all the spectators to see the horses and make up their minds about what to bet.
To get here the best thing to do is to ask a local taxi driver as it can be difficult to locate unassisted. If however you are brave, then the entrance is off Omar Beyhum road, and there is parking inside. The road above the Hippodrome, Abdallah El Yafi, is the highway connecting Cola and Adlieh.
