Hari Raya Puasa or Eid-ul-Fitr is the biggest celebration in Malaysia which marks the end of the month of Ramadan. This is a major celebration which goes on for three days and is characterised by a variety of excellent traditional food, a number of rituals etc. Other important festivals in the country are Awal Muharram, Maulidul Rasul, the Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, Christmas and so forth. Some of the important public holidays include Hari Merdeka (Independence Day celebrated each year on 31 August), Malaysia Day and the King’s birthday (celebrated on the first Saturday of June). Thaipusam, a Hindu festival, is also celebrated with much pomp and show at the Waterfall Temple. Those inclined towards sports must visit the country during the Malaysian Grand Prix which is hosted during the month of March.
