Fort Cornwallis is the most favorite tourist destination in Penang. This historical site is located in George Town, besides the Victoria Memorial Clock.

This massive fort was built in the year 1786, when Penang was conquered by the British rulers. This territory was handed over to Captain Francis Light. The fort received its name after Governor - General Charles Cornwallis.

The fort served as a protection of the island against the French troupes.

The interior of the fort consists of several sections like a history museum, an al fresco amphitheater and a souvenir and handicraft shop.

The history museum holds the details and documents of the historical events of this fort. Visitors can buy some local handicraft stuff at the souvenir shop in the fort. The amphitheater hosts several dance and musical shows.

Some of the older structures such as harbor light, ammos storage area, prison cells and chapel are at close vicinity from the fort.
