Queen Street in George Town is mainly famous for its temples and shops located here. The most important temple on the street is the Sri Mariamman Temple built in 1883. This is the oldest temple in Penang.
The devotees of Goddess Sri Mariamman are mostly from South India. This area remains flooded with Hindu devotees all round the year. The Hindus gather in large numbers during special Hindu festivals.
Navaratri is one of such festival held on Queen Street. The temple possesses a typical South Indian architecture. The exterior is colorful with several holy and mythical figures carved on it.
Queen Street also houses several small shops run by the local shop keepers. Tourists can buy local handicrafts and jewelry in these shops.
