Hang Li Po was the 5th wife of the Sultan of Melaka, Mansur Shah. She was a princess from China, who got married with the Sultan in the 15th century. Their marriage became a political tie between Melaka and China.
Both the kingdoms were at the height of wealth and power then. Hence this tie up became a major issue for the rest of the realms nearby. The well was built by the followers of the princess Hang Li Po on her arrival in Melaka.
The well dates back to the year 1459. This well served as the vital source of water in the Melaka town.
The well is surrounded by many myths and legends. One of them says, the well never dry, even during drought.
Two centuries later, in 1677 the well was enclosed within solid walls by the Dutch rulers so as to prevent it from the attack of enemies.
