Kek Lok Si is a reputed Buddhist temple in the southeast part of Asia. The largest temple of this area lies at Air Hitam in George Town, Penang. The crowded market of Air Hitam is located next to this temple.
The temple was built under the guidance of Goddess of Mercy temple's chief monk in 1893. However, the most important featrure of this temple is the seven storied pagoda, which was built in 1930.
The pagoda exhibits a spectacular blend of Burmese style of architecture and Thai Chinese design and is called as the Pagoda of 10, 000 Buddhas.
Besides its size, the temple is important, since it displays the merger of several religions. This is the sole structure where Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism was accepted.
This temple is also known as Monastery on Crane Hill due to its location on the hill. Visitors need to climb up the hill to reach to this temple. Tourists can see the bronze statue of Goddess of Mercy or Goddess Kuan Yin in this temple.
